The Federated Church in Mitchell, Nebraska is a wonderful example of how the gospel of Jesus Christ brings people together. In 1906 members of the Christian Church began meeting in the Mitchell High School building (which now is the Odd Fellows Hall). The following year work was underway to build their own Church building and Mr. J. W. Hall, an elder in the Church, was the general contractor. The building was completed for a cost of $4,500 and it was dedicated on November 10, 1907. At that time the only other Church building in Mitchell was the Presbyterian Church which was built in 1906.
For a time the Methodists in Mitchell used the new Christian Church building for their meeting place since they did not yet have their own facility.
In 1917 a group of about 50 citizens met in the Christian Church to organize a Congregational Church. Later that same year members of the Christian Church and members of the newly-formed Congregational Church met to have their congregations merge into a single Church. Articles of Incorporation were drawn up giving birth to The Federated Churches of Mitchell. Rev. Walter C. Rundin of Crawford, NE was the first pastor to serve The Federated Churches. Toward the end of 1917 an addition to the south was added to the original building to enlarge the fellowship hall and the kitchen.
Rev. Lawrence Dry, the second pastor to serve The Federated Churches, served this congregation for 30 years from 1926-1957.. During his pastorate an extensive remodeling and building program was implemented which produced a beautiful remodeled and enlarged sanctuary, and enlarged fellowship hall and kitchen, 21 Sunday School classrooms, a Boy Scout room, a music room and the pastor’s study.
In 1999 the name of the Church was changed from The Federated Churches to the Federated Church; this action severed the denomination ties of the past making the Federated Church a completely independent and non-denominational Church. Several years later the name was changed to The Crossroads Bible Church. This name lasted only a very short time before it was changed back to its current name, the Federated Church.
The Federated Church has a proud history of serving God through Christian discipleship. Our motto is “Where Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” We take an active role in the life of Mitchell and the surrounding communities, we participate in the Mitchell-Morrill Ministerial Association, and we are a participating member of the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference.
Being an independent Church free from denominational ties gives us the latitude to serve in ministry to persons, families, communities, and missions quickly and in creative ways as the Holy Spirit directs us. |
